The Worcester Electrician Guide
Which jobs are notifiable under Part P, what an EICR actually tests and what its codes mean, when a full rewire is genuinely due and when it is not, and what happens between your first phone call and the certificate landing in your inbox.
A burning or fishy smell from a socket, switch or consumer unit. That is overheating plastic — stop using the circuit.
Scorch marks, browning or visible arcing around a faceplate, light fitting or fuse board.
An RCD that will not stay in, or that trips again within a few minutes of being reset.
A tingle or a shock from a tap, radiator, appliance or metal light fitting — that points to an earthing fault.
Lights across several rooms flickering or dimming whenever a shower, kettle or oven switches on.
Power lost to part of your property while the neighbours still have supply. If the whole street is dark, ring 105 instead.
Do you cover my part of Worcester?
We work across all the Worcester postcodes — WR1 to WR5 in the city, plus Droitwich (WR9), Pershore (WR10), Malvern (WR14) and Upton-upon-Severn (WR8). Our address is High St, Worcester WR1 2FN. If you are just outside that, call 07851 872110 and ask — we often travel further for larger jobs.
How much does a fuse board replacement cost?
It depends on the number of circuits, the earthing arrangement and how the existing wiring tests, so we will not quote a figure blind. We look at the board, test the circuits, then give you a fixed written price before anything starts. Quoting is free and carries no obligation.
Does my house actually need a full rewire?
Often not. Rubber or fabric-covered cable, round-pin sockets or no earth at the light fittings usually do mean a full rewire. But plenty of Worcester houses only need the lighting circuits or one ring replacing. An EICR tells you which, and we will say so even when it is the cheaper answer.
How often do landlords need an EICR?
At least every five years. Under the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020 you must have the installation inspected and tested at least every five years, give the tenant a copy of the report within 28 days, and complete any C1, C2 or FI remedial work within 28 days.
Do you charge for quotes?
Quotes are free with no obligation. For anything beyond a straight like-for-like swap we come and look at the job before pricing it — guessing a price from a description is how quotes end up doubling once the work has started.
Can you install an EV charger at my house?
Yes. Before quoting we check your main fuse rating and earthing arrangement, because a PME supply needs open-PEN protection under Regulation 722.411.4.1 — either built into the charger or provided by an earth rod. All new chargepoints must be smart units under the Electric Vehicle (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021.
My power has gone off — is that an electrician job?
Check the neighbours first. If the whole street is dark it is a network fault: call 105 free of charge and National Grid Electricity Distribution will handle it. If it is only your property, or only part of it, that is an installation fault and we are who you need. Our phone is answered 24 hours.
